Dr. Kellon Request for general trim advice

Good Morning Dr. Kellon,

On the hoof forum I requested mark-ups Jan 20th but Kirsten informed me today that those are unfortunately delayed.  She suggested I ask you for general trim advice as my farrier is coming on Feb. 9th to do Crackers’ first trim since his laminitis flare-up January 17th. My farrier has expressed she is only interested in what the vet has said about the x-rays I had done.  My vet didn’t say anything and I’m not sure how good the x-rays are.  I did mark the tip of his frog and ran a wire down the front of the hoof.  You are a vet I trust and your suggestions I hope she will be interested in.

Crackers’ CP has been increased by .5 mg so he is currently on 4.7 mg.  We also started soaking his hay as we had been only rinsing it because of the freezing temperatures.  He is also now getting a 1/3 scoop (came in packaging) of ALCAR every evening.  My case history has not been updated with the increased CP or ALCAR dosage.  The vet would not do blood tests at the time of the X-rays even though I requested them and will instead pull blood next week as Crackers’ will have been on the new dosage for almost 3 weeks.  Crackers is no longer as sore as he was and is moving much better.  He is in padded Cavallo CLB’s with socks.

Thank you for any trim advice you can provide –

The LF is in pretty good shape. Bone is very healthy, minimal true rotation. I would back up (round off or bevel out of weightbearing) the toe  from 10:00 to 2:00 and lower the heels about 3 degrees.

The RF has sinking and more rotation.  The frog and sole are pulled forward. The most forward point of weightbearing should be half of the distance between tip of toe and visible point of frog so well into the sole for the bevel. Heels are too high and while they don't look too underrun on the sole view on the lateral they definitely are.  There is not much sole depth under the CB though so I would rocker the heels for now.
