Hello all,
I have not updated CH as all things to influence are in flux - in the middle of diet change for new hay balance (K. Gustafson), Test results just in today and this Calculation scares me. Blood drawn Nov 4 at 1;30 pm, hay availibility would have been almost 100% for 4 hours. Temperature - 4C ACTH 12.4 pmol/L Insulin 230 pmol/L Glucose 4.9 mmol/L EMS Calculator gives me G/I 2.65 RISQI 0.17 MIRG 12 Saying at high risk of laminitis.? Horse is in light work and has been sound to ride for the full past 12 months. -- Kandace K Rocky Mountains, Alberta, Oct 2020 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Kandace%20J%20and%20K https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=259062 |

Hi Kandace. Which horse are you refering to J or K? When the insulin levels are this high it can trigger laminitis and pain in the feet.
Because of the diet changes- what exactly did you feed the morning of the test besides the hay? If the horse is in "light work" and has been sound to ride- I would be increasing the exercise- 30 minutes a day (or more,if horse is able) of a working trot and a working walk would be very helpful in moving that insulin level down. Hope this helps. -- Trisha DePietro Aug 2018 NH Primary Responder Dolly and Hope's Case Histories Dolly's Photos Hope's Photos HOW TO SEARCH THE ARCHIVES: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/wiki/1993 |

I would add to Trisha's questions: What was the ambient temperature at the time of blood draw?

Totally missed this. Thanks Trisha.
Kandace, you probably know that the temp could have an effect on raising insulin. -- Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 ECIR Group Inc. President 2021-2022 HOW TO SEARCH THE ARCHIVES: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/wiki/1993 |

Hi Kandace,
Just an FYI, an insulin of 230 pmol/L is about 38 uIU/ml (divide pmol/L by 6 to convert), which is abnormally high but not in the red zone for laminitis, which begins at about 80 uIU/ml. I would continue to exercise as much as possible. If you add soaking her hay you can probably bring the insulin down to near normal levels. -- Kirsten and Shaku (EMS + PPID) and Snickers (EMS) - 2019 Kitimat, BC, Canada ECIR Group Moderator Shaku's Photo Album Snickers' Case History Snickers' Photo Album |
