Exercise appropriateness ?
Diana RL
Hi,
Scooter started Invokana in December. Will be getting updates labs done this Friday. He is also PPID but that is controlled. His weight is good.
I believe there will still need to be an increase to his Invokana dosage pending the bloodwork (He is 100mg and is 430ish pounds) which may help comfort levels still improve.
My question is, he is at the point where I believe I should be adding exercise back in. Currently I am hand walking about 15 mins a day - in boots on soft ground or sand.
He is not a riding or driving pony so only walking or free lunging are exercise options.
Assuming physical foot comfort continues to improve or stays as-is, what exercise would be appropriate (length, intensity, number of days a week) to continue to help stabilize his insulin?
Thanks!

Hi Diana. I reviewed your case histories that are posted for Scooter. Is he still getting Outlast? TC 30% ? Laminox and Heiro? If not, would you update one of the histories( delete the old one) and include his invokana dosing and the new blood results? That would be really helpful in following Scooters story and giving good advice. Here is a link that is worth reading about increasing exercise , when and how much, etc. https://www.ecirhorse.org/DDT+E-exercise.php How long has he been pain free? Has his trim been tweaked to support more exercise? Has he grown out enough hoof for more serious exercise?
I think folks who have more experience with Invokana and can speak to the calorie requirements of Invokana and exercise...Free choice hay is good, but not sure about the rest of the diet piece and exercise, when taking invokana. Will you also be testing ACTH friday too? --

Hi,
Yes. Friday will be everything Dr. Kellon suggested for monitoring Invokana in addition to acth again.
Thanks for the response. I just re-did/updated his case history (I am new at this). I put more info in and updated everything that needed to be.
His feed has changed (now on Stabul 1). I contacted Randy for the appropriate feeding rate.
He is not pain free yet...much better but I would not say pain free. With the boots on soft ground he is sound or pretty close. Turning and on hard ground still visually lamanitic.
Xrays being done this Friday and I will post them. His heels are too long but my new farrier wants to see xrays befor doing anything significant. His hind feet turn elfish (toes curl up) after 3 weeks. The growth is tremendous. We are on a 3 week trim schedule with the xrays hopefully helping address the trim issues more significantly.

It doesn't sound like he's ready for any forced exercise yet. Please get a full set of hoof photos up (see the Wiki) too.

I will get them over the next few days and post them.
To confirm, stop the hand walking even though he seems less stiff and more comfortable after?

That is not a horse that should be doing forced exercise at this point. You want him to be completely comfortable moving on his own before you start forced exercise.

Understood. Thank you. No excercise at all until he is 100%.
Thanks. I will be back to this thread once xrays and pics are done and uploaded.

If the walking improves his comfort, keep it up. That signifies a circulatory issue. He could benefit from Jiaogulan.

He is on Laminox. That has J in it correct?

I just uploaded (I think I did it correctly) his front xrays from today. I'll try to take the physical foot pictures this weekend.
