feeding oats/beet pulp to recovered IR horses directly after
I just started giving my pony 1/4 cup Speedi Beet 2x a day to help with lack of energy during trail rides. I posted before, but did not get an answer on how much Speedi Beet I should give her. She gets 3 oz of Triple Crown Balance Cubes 2x a day which now I mix with her Speedi Beet plus her hay; 13-14 pounds per day over a 24 hour period. She is in full exercise and is riden between 75-100 miles per month. She currently weighs 640 pounds. Miles will decrease quite a bit once winter sets in. Her last two insulin levels were 40. They were taken in June and then again in September.
Please advise as I do not want to cause her to gain weight or have a laminitic episode. Janet and Maggie IR -- Janet M. OH 2021 |

Hi Janet, I can't find a case history for your pony. Without that we really can't comment on diet other than to say that if 640lbs is her ideal weight she should be eating no more than 12.8lbs total per day to maintain that weight. Have you had her hay analyzed? Balanced? Has she had laminitis? If so when? What does her trim look like? The lack of energy may be diet related, or it may be any number of other thing.

She had laminitis dx August 2021, had slight rotation in right front only. She gets trimmed every 4 weeks toe back heel down. Does not wear shoes; never did. Hay has been analyzed 10 sets of X-rays since dx blood work every 3 months. Back in full work since June 1, prior to that she
wasnot allowed to travel down steep hills. She is NOT in a laminitic episode. When I posted my comment before Dr Kellon responded that with the amount of exercise she was not getting enough to eat and that I could add speeding beet or the tc cubes. Since I was already giving her the hay cubes I purchased Speedi beet, but I really don’t know how much to give her. Is 1/4 cup 2x a day too much? I did notice she had a bit more energy on Sunday Janet and Maggie IR

Hi Janet,
Do you have a hay analysis? If you do, one of the things our hay balancers do as part of their service is advise on how much to feed for that level of work. Plus you get the added benefit of knowing what minerals need to be added to the diet to cover all your bases.
