Flyte update

Lecia Martin

Dr. Kellon and group;    Flyte's latest labs are not bad.   Insulin is higher than Jan. but triglycerides have dropped somewhat.   This blood draw was done June 9th and vet arrived earlier than anticipated so he had not had his invokana.  Hay was constant.

Insulin   279 pmol/l
Glucose   4.8 mmol/l
Acth         4.0  pmol/l
Trig.          1.2   mmol/l

I started Alcar on the 17th  and have increased his beet pulp to 1 lb dry weight per day.  We are planning to test again mid August. Case history is up to date.

For all those wondering if invokana is worth the risk,  I say its a definate yes.  It is time/labor intensive managing this diet but so worth it.   In the fall of 2017, before I fully adopted the practices advocated here, we dug a hole on our farm for Flyte,  just in case.   I drive by it everyday on my way to the manure pile and give thanks.  Thanks to Dr. Kellon and all the volunteers  who's knowledge, time and dedication are invaluable.  Big thanks and hugs to you all.

Btw Dr. Kellon  I did get new strips and it was negative for ketones.

Those are pretty good numbers . How long after his morning meal were they taken - or have you gone to free choice? I would keep Invokana dose the same for now but you can add more beet pulp. How is his attitude?

Thanks Dr. Kellon   I have gone to free choice so he has hay all the time.  As for the beet pulp I will try and get him to eat more, I split the 1lb between to feedings.   When I increased it before he was leaving alot of it.   As for his attitude, he is as bossy as ever so no change there.  Will keep invokana dose the same.

Sounds good! If he liked the soy hull pellets you can start those up again.

Yes he does like them alot.  So in addition to beet pulp or instead of and how much should he get daily?   Feed store is 2 hours one way, so it would be good to how much to stock in.

The hulls are similar to BP in that they ferment easily and are more calorie dense. If he will eat 1.5 lbs of 50:50 BP and hulls three times a day that would be my target. He will likely back off hay consumption but that's fine as long as his weight stays stable.
