Gooey glob of Psyllium husks - digestion risk

I’m experimenting how to get enough psyllium husks into Rusty to stop his FFW. Lately he’s not consistently eating the TCTBC mash with psyllium added. He did eat psyllium when I put it in his supplement mash. However it makes such a gooey glob even with extra water, I worry it’s not safe for him to eat.

Hi, Lasell. Dr. Kellon advices AGAINST feeding psyllium of any kind with medications and supplements. The concern is that meds and minerals may be swept up by and cling to psyllium, so they are eliminated rather than being absorbed. Feed psyllium at least a couple of hours before or after you give meds and supplements. Also try to give it when Rusty is hungry.
Like you, I feed psyllium husk with ODTBC/TCRBC and a teaspoon salt. If I think it's too gooey, I add more water. I definitely don't feed it gelled, more like porridge. I don't need to feed it every day, but when I feed it for a week, I add half a cup or so of Sand Clear psyllium "crumbles" for flavoring. Dr Kellon suspects psyllium pellets aren't as effective as psyllium husk -- they really don't break down in water -- but they apparently smell good to my horses. FWIW, I've tested both Sand Clear and Sand Rid for ESC and Starch, and both are safe for EMS horses. You can see analyses of four different psyllium pellets in Files. Ground flax seed gets gelatinous, too. Is that okay mixed with supplements? I realize it’s in a smaller amount. Does that make it okay?

Hi Lasell, I use the ground flax as a base to my mineral mix. Its fine with the minerals....and supplements.

As Trisha points out, if gooey ground flax is fine for your horse, it’s no problem at all. Some members in very cold climates have issues when it freezes because it coats like glue. It’s not necessary to feed it so wet that it becomes gooey. A small increase in the carrier ( like RSR BP or ODTBC/TCTBC) and less water will remove the goo factor. For an overweight horse, an increase in carrier just means slightly less hay to account for the extra calories.

It's perfectly safe to feed the wet gooey psyllium.
