Hay analysis added

Pam

I will be getting her diet balanced but in the meantime is this a safe hay to feed unsoaked to Luna? Should I still be feeding her the emergency diet? Is it good hay? Or should I continue giving her Teff hay which she doesn’t love? I will be getting her bloodwork April 10 when she has been on Metformin 5 weeks.

It is safe to feed unsoaked but definitely needs mineral balancing. It looks like it was put up wet, probably with salting of the bales. Be alert for mold formation.

It is a round bale and I believe it was put up dry. He (farmer) prides himself on his quality of hay! We have fed others with no signs of mold. It is under a tarp but we will definitely be watching out for mold! Thanks!

Hi Pam. How did you take samples from the round bale? And did you take samples from several different round bales or just one?

We got a sample tool from our Cty farm extension office and he took from two bales. It kind of worries me to rely on one test!

The analysis shows 19% moisture, definitely a mold risk. Salting high moisture hay is an old process, eg. https://www.cattletoday.com/threads/salting-round-bales-experiment.101695/ . That hay has the highest sodium I've ever seen.

Corrected to 19% moisture.

Dr Kellon, with that high of sodium is it safe to feed? Also if I am feeding it to Luna should I not supplement salt per emergency diet. We have already fed two of those round bales without any mold but I for sure will check to make sure these other ones don’t have any. I did ask farmer if he salted them. Thanks so much!

Yes, it's safe but you won't need to add any salt.
