Hay and New Hay Plus Moving
I just received my hay analysis for the current load of hay. I added the SE test as well. It's in the CH for Prize. So now do I just ask one of the moderators to interpret it for me? I'll try finding someone I remember somewhere in the website there is a list. I will be out of hay and have to get more in about a month, then we will be moving to Colorado for the summer and I will have an entire new type of hay to feed. Should I save the money and not get the next batch from Arizona analyzed and just wait until we are settled in Colorado? Thank you all!

Hi Sara, The list of balancers is in the files section. The direct link is: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/files/6%20Diet%20Balancing/HAY%20BALANCING-1.pdf At 6% starch and 6.8% ESC I wouldn't feed this to an IR horse if you can find something else. Do you know if this was grown on an irrigated pasture?
Thanks, PA 2014 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Sherry%20and%20Scutch_Scarlet |

I've tried calling the feed store manager but she won't return my call, so I cannot figure out how to learn more. I will switch feed stores for my next purchase if the new ones will answer my questions. My other choice wold be to add more of the alfalfa I had already purchased and still have. the price of hay is astronomical now and I just have to figure out how to safely use what I have until June.

I also just realized that here in central Arizona, just about everything that grows outside of the desert has to be irrigated, so I am certain the hay was from an irrigate field.

Lesley Bludworth
HI Sara,
This is Lesley Bludworth, Robyn C's friend. I purchase burmuda hay from Scottsdale Livestock and so far it has always come back within safe range to feed even unsoaked. Although I do soak it as Sophie's insulin is not well controlled even with it soaked. The first batch (24 bales) I was able to balance with a product from HorseTech with added zinc and copper (based on recommendations from a balancer from the list). the bermuda hay is very high in Iron here in AZ so I figure even though the second batch of hay I had to get a custom mix for, I have some minerals left from the first balance recomendations that I will be able to use in the future depending. You would not want to feed alfalfa ever to an IR horse I believe from what I have learned here on this site as it can be high in starch and balancing the mininerals would be very difficult. -- Lesley Bludworth Phoenix, AZ 7/2022 Sophie TWH mare IR/EMS, PPID? https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/SophieB%20Case%20History https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=277749 |

Hello,
what should be the cost of a hay analysis. I had a local hay dealer come and sample my hay and send it in , cost 362.00. That seems pretty high to me , am I out of touch? -- Sandy O. WI 2023 you |

I sent mine to Equi-Analytical-one of the ones most recommended here in the ECIR information. Their pricing is on their website. Use the link in the info on IR from this group. You need the "Trainer 603". Equi-Analytical is under a primary lab name, Dairy One. If I remember correctly, the price was a little over $100, plus additional cost for the Selenium I wanted.

Hi Sandy,
The 603 Trainers Test from Equi-Analytical costs $71. For that price, you need to have a corer and take samples of 20-30 of your bales and sent the hay in yourself, which is what most of us do. If you had someone come to your barn with their corer, take the samples and submit them as well, it will undoubtedly cost more. What they charged you seems like a lot but I don’t know how far they had to come to take samples and how long it took them. I have my own hay corer (they aren’t exactly inexpensive either) and do it all by myself or with help from a family member. It takes a bit of strength to shove the corer into the hay bale from the end. Some state or community funded ag resources might have one for you to borrow. -- Martha in Vermont

This is where we bought ours --- the gold standard and the one recommended by Dairy One, which Equi-Analytical is part of. That is where I have my hay testing done, they're are great there!

Hi Sandy,
You can purchase one from a link on the Equi-Analytical site. It’s gone up quite a bit in price since I bought mine, a number of years ago so you should probably read over the specs on theirs and then check around a bit for something similar. And be sure to look into borrowing one. -- Martha in Vermont

Sandy, I bought mine off of Amazon.
But I think you can borrow one from your county agriculture center??? -- Lesley Bludworth Phoenix, AZ 7/2022 Sophie TWH mare IR/EMS, PPID? https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/SophieB%20Case%20History https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=277749 |

There are many good hay probes. Follow the links here https://georgiaforages.caes.uga.edu/content/dam/caes-subsite/forages/docs/faqs/028-FAQ-hayprobe.pdf .

Don't forget you will need a battery powered drill. I use a Dewalt 20 volt drill. (Use in "drill" setting.)

I have this one from Valley Vet. It is SO EASY TO USE! The prior one I had I got from EquiAnalytical and I thought it was hard to use...

I just realized I bought my probe directly from Best Harvest, as Valley Vet did not have the 3/8" drill size.
