Himalayan Salt
Hi. Looked for Info on Himalayan salt on here- but can't find anything specifically. According to what I found on web is that HS is Not high in iron. The assumed link of the pink colour to " high iron" is incorrect. The pink in HS stems from: potassium, magnesium and calcium. Should HS be replaced by table salt for IR icelandic horse-and why? Thanks in advance Tina ( Rani is IR mare) Rani in NY 2022 |

Hi Tina,
This is interesting. Can you provide sources for this info ? We generally refer to the impurities in Himalayan Salt, including iron,as being reasons to go with plain table salt. I can't see a reason for feeding Ca, Mg, and K and Fe when I just want NaCl and Iodine. Thanks. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario 2002 |

Thanks Lorna
I was under the impression that ALL mammals need Ca, Mg, K and Fe? Am getting more and more confused (even after reading all the New Member articles🙈). still looking in my history for the source of above.. -- Rani in NY 2022 |

Hi Tina,
But how much? And in what ratios? And....? What we do here is test the hay ( since it is usually the major part of the diet),to see what it actually contains. We know what a horse needs for optimal health. We then begin the process of balancing the hay to provide what he needs,by adding the vitamins and minerals(in correct ratios) lacking in the hay. Whatever else we add(beet pulp, for example) is included in our calculations. That is a pretty simplistic view, but it will become clearer in time. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario 2002 |

The main reason not to use Himalayan salt is you are being ripped off. There is no health benefit from the tiny amounts of contaminating minerals (including toxic ones), it does not contain significant iodine, and costs a lot more.
