How to feed Acetyl-L Carnitine
I've been reading up on ALCAR for neuropathic pain, ordered it and now have it. Wow, does it ever have a strong smell and sour lemony flavour! Is that typical?
Jack is already very picky and we have to syringe his meds. I haven't come across anything about how to feed ALCAR. Do your equines eat it in a carrier? Do you need to syringe it with water? If so, can it be given at the same time as metformin in milk of magnesia and prascend? Here is the product I got. Doesn't list any non-medicinal ingredients like flavouring: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07WFQPGFS Are there any contraindications or side effects I should be aware of? Thank you for any tips and info! -- Hilary and Amika Prince George, BC, Canada Joined July 2019 NRC+ proficient grad January 2022 Amika's Case History Folder Amika's Photos Folder Jack's Case History Jack's Photos Folder |

Hilary, I dissolve the Alcar powder in a little water and make sure there are no lumpy bits, then add it to soaked beet pulp, mix well. I then top the beet pulp with a taste tempter such as safe pellets. The acidity doesn't seem to bother my horse (but it sure is sour!).

Hi Hilary, just fwiw, Alcar is quite hydrophilic, so any residue that is left on the measuring spoon will attract moisture and water droplets will form. It’s best to keep the containers tightly closed to avoid moisture getting in and forming hard clumps.

Hi Hilary,
Logo got ALCAR for several years. My thoughts were the same as yours initially. I just dumped it into his feed, whatever it happened to be at the time, and he chowed down on it without issues. It was that experience that reminded me that we don’t always appreciate the same flavors as the horse. Your sour lemony description is perfect. -- Martha in Vermont

Thanks for the replies and suggestions. I will give Jack a try and see what he things, but I will say that he's off his usual soy hull carrier at the moment and I can't even get his former minerals into him. He is very suspicious and fussy even about his hay!

Uckele has this product. Comments include a user whose "picky" horse ate it without a problem. Don't know what that means, but who knows? It may work for your horse. Here's their link:

Thanks, I'm in Canada and can't readily get Uckele products shipped to me.

My PIA gelding will not eat the Uckele version, nor will he eat PQ with DC in it and about a million other things. He will eat any version of Stabul-1 as long a there's nothing added to it. He gets meds via syringe except for when he needed Equioxx - that he ate out of my hand with a treat. He's totally turned into his mother and makes me nuts.
