Invonkana- starting it soon

Amy

I am waiting for this new drug to arrive.
Besides bloodwork....any other changes to his diet?  I have read up but seems to me it is different with each horse?  I see some with other supplements,  others with free choice hay.  I think I am getting confused with Invonkana,  and similar meds,  SSTG or something.

Any advice before I start to be sure I am doing the right things.

I know I need to watch glucose/urine?  What is the best way to do this and how often?

I will discuss with my vet, but honestly,  he is so sought after and busy, he just doesn't have ample time to do it all and this is new to him as well.   I'd like to utilize this group when possible.

Appreciate it all.

My guy is getting better everyday.  I will be back home on Monday and a new trim on Tuesday.   I will then add a 3rd set of hoof photos and hope I get them right this time for markups.

Hi, Amy.

Dr Kellon is your source for diet information for equines on Invokana, which is one SGLT2 inhibitor. The most immediate thing you can do is make sure your CH is up to date, so that Stormy's diet is clearly laid out and his labs are all updated when Dr Kellon sees your question.

Hi Amy,
I think a goal is to keep your vet in the loop so that he can learn from the experience and be more helpful to you.  You might ask his office if he has introductory information on feeding from Dr Kellon on hand.

I’m not exactly up-to-date in the most current information, but I believe you need to regularly test triglycerides, if you can--

Amy,

Please send me your vet's e-mail address. I have two concise informative files to bring him up to speed quickly on what is known so far. Send to drkellon "at" gmail.com.

Briefly, you should get insulin, triglycerides and serum chemistry before you start and repeat in 1 to 2 months. You are correct that horses react differently, which makes it difficult to have a one size fits all approach to feeding but most end up on free choice hay to make up for the energy deficit caused by losing glucose in the urine.

You can buy urine dipsticks in any drug store or online - e.g. https://tinyurl.com/yraj4m4p . Check the urine once a week and pay attention to both glucose and protein as protein can indicate a urinary tract infection.

Dr K
You did send him an email several weeks ago.  Is that the same information you are talking about?  If so, he has it and I don't want to duplicate efforts.   He did look over it and he said he was impressed and intrigued.   That is why we are starting the new meds.

When will I know if/when he can have free choice hay?  I definitely don't want him to gain any weight.   I'm sure it is a learn as I go and see how he reacts.

Hoping to get bloodwork next week.  Then wait for meds and go from there.

Since this is new to him as well, I just want to reach out to this group as well.

Martha, I 100% plan to keep my vet in the loop along with my farrier.   We all 3 talked as a group and we are working together as a team.  At the end of the day, Stormy has to be my responsibility with the help of my vet and farrier.   I want to learn as much as I can to help Stormy.  And this group knows much more than myself or my vet on this matter.

Appreciate all the assistance.   I guess I am just getting anxious to start something new.  🙃

If you see him losing weight (difficult with a winter coat so get used to palpating his ribs) or fat deposits going down, go to free choice hay.
