Metformin cost exceptionally high?

Diana RL

Hi,

I was planning to start Cody on Metformin.  He has done remarkably well with diet and exercise in getting his insulin down (from 157 in Feb to 49 in March), but I was hoping to put him on Metformin (plus keeping up with everything else) to try to get it within normal range.   My vet just told me a one-month supply of Metformin from Wedgewood is $500.  Invokana for Scooter is cheaper than that!  Cody is 1200 pounds (He's not a ridiculously large horse!).

Just curious to see if there are any other options out there (prefer compounding/powder) vs. having to grind dozens and dozens a pills at a time.

Thanks,

Diana

Diana,
In October 2022 I purchased a months supply of metformin at Costco for about $20 to $30.

Lesley,

Was that pills or powder?  Can you remind me of the dosing again?

Thanks!

Diana, I inquired about powdered metformin from my vet last year and was quoted $280 (I don’t know who the compounding pharmacy was) for 60 scoops.  At 11mg (1.5 scoops) twice a day that would have lasted me less than a month.  I buy the pills for $35 per bottle and grind them myself in a coffee grinder.  I’ll spend my money elsewhere.

I always bought the Metformin pills at Costco for less than $30 for a month's worth & ground them in an old coffee grinder.  My Icelandic ate them mixed in his dish feed just fine.  The very first Metformin RX I took to a local pharmacy & they charged me $120!!!  A friend recommended Costco Pharmacy & I never looked back!

It was pills that I ground up in my coffee grinder.
1000 mg per 100 lb i believe.

Thank you, all.  Pills looks like the only option from a cost perspective.

Next question...doses everyone syringe the ground pills?  Mixed with water?  Something else?

Can it be fed at the same time as a meal?

Appreciate the guidance.

I use the human tablets for Salsa. Grind them in a coffee grinder and he eats it on his feed.

With GoodRx I get 660 pills a month for about $20.
Putting him on metformin has helped tremendously!
Wish I had tried it sooner!
