Metformin palatability help

Anna.warzecha4@...

Joker was eating the Metformin powder in his "grain" for a while now he does not want to eat it. Before I resort to just syringing it are there some suggestions to get the horse to eat it.

He was leaving the powder so I tried adding 1-2 oz of water that worked for a couple days now he wont eat even his other pellets because the Metformin is stuck to it with the added water.

Anna,
I soak 1/2 lb of TC timothy pellets and mix the metformin powder into it.  My mare wont touch any "grain" anymore.
I have to put it in a bit of soaked cubes that is separate from the cubes I put her other supplements into as she will sometimes
not eat it all with the stuff mixed in so at least she eats her metformin first.  She really likes the tc cubes tho.

There's lots of things to try if you do a search for Metformin.   Here's one recent thread:
https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/topic/93534131#283220

I like the idea of dissolving the tablets in tea (peppermint or strawberry flavored? +/-stevia), then sprinkling on food.  Jaini, one of our vet volunteers, mixed it with olive oil then drizzled it on hay cubes and her pickiest eater liked that.

I had the same problem.  I soak the tablets in a small amount of water in a mortar/pestle for about twelve hours…I put them in when feeding ready for the next night/morning feed,  The water softens the coating and they are easy to mash up in the mortar and pestle.  I then drop a fruit tea bag in - raspberry flavoured, with stevia, no sugar - and let that steep for 5 mins. You then have raspberry metformin tea! I pour it on Max’s feed and he gobbles it up like it’s a huge treat.

Michelle,
I asked the pharmacist about the medications stability after being ground up or soaked in water. As I was having to grind them and leave in baggies for someone else to feed.
He did not recommend the water. He Wasn't sure the medication would be stable in water, but that was his guess.

Lesley my understanding is the water only softens the film coating on the outside which then makes it easy to mash the tablets.  The film coating covers the horrid bitterness which is on the inside.  I don’t crush them before soaking either, they are way too hard!

Max is terrible to syringe things into his mouth, and I didn’t want giving his tabs to become an ordeal.  I didn’t want him getting mouth ulcers either and this way the food provides a buffer as well.  Seems to work ok for him.
