New Crack? on Dakota's RF

denisegoergen@...

Dakota has been stable all winter with no apparent lameness. Today, this crack(?) appeared on his RF. Please see his CH album.  He is not favoring the leg at all. We have cleaned it and applied an antibacterial and the farrier said he will "open it up more" when he's next out. Should I call my vet? What is happening? Of course, this happens when I'm out of town so the stable manager is my "eyes on the ground" right now.

Also, Dakota has been on Metformin since November. His last blood draw showed up a much improved insulin number and the plan is to "hold the course" and retest in spring. Spring starts March 15 but you wouldn't know it in Wisconsin! Should he be retested early spring, mid-spring....does it matter?

Thank you again to this entire group. Such a journey....

Hi Denise,

My first thought is that looks like an abscess growing out. Did he have one last fall?

I agree it looks like an old abscess exit hole. I wouldn't open it up. It will grow out. As long as he is doing well, test again when it's convenient.

Yes! Dakota had an abscess in his RF last July. I had no idea that it would still be growing out. Thank you so much for the input.

On retesting-Do we wean him off Metformin before testing or is he likely to be on it for life?

Leave him on for retesting. It sometimes stops working. He will need to stay on it unless something changes in his management - i.e. more exercise.
