Protein/ muscle growth
DEBBIE GIRARD <dgwof@...>
Ive seen quite a few responses that mention diets that are too low in Protein to maintain or build a horses muscles. Is there a chart in a file that gives information as to how many grams of protein a horse requires at different levels of work to build muscle? I know the quality of the protein is most important but by just googling it the information available is different from one site to another...Just hoping this group has that information and I just havent found it. thank you everyone!

Thank you for that info! I think Im a bit confused now because some responses Ive read to questions about protein have stated that any hay less then 8% protein needs to be supplemented with another protein source but this article says it can be as low as 5.9% as long as its fed in high enough quantities.......I think if its a low DE and a low protein hay then it might have to be supplemented..
Does anyone know if there is a percentage that grams of protein have to be increased as work load increases? Thank you and thank you again Trisha! -- Debbie Girard Massachusetts 2022 |

Hi Debbie
NRC Nutrition Requirements for Horses has formulas for maintenance and for work. Not sure the chart info is available on line but Dr Kellon reviews all these requirements in her courses. www.drkellon.com She also talks about it here https://drkhorsesense.wordpress.com/2017/08/13/protein-for-the-active-horse/ This is where diet analysis with an understanding of work load and tolerance are important and can bring huge reward. -- Nancy C in NH ECIR Moderator 2003 ECIR Group Inc.
