Starting Devil's Claw while on Previcox for ringbone pain
Hi all,
I will start again because I think my last question got lost. No worries. I have Devil's Claw powder in hand. I know the correct starting dosage. Andy is currently on Previcox and I want to try to substitute it with Devil's Claw. He has been on Previcox or 3 years or so. It was suggested through reference to a file here that I start him on the DC only. Like DROP the Previcox completely when I start the DC. Is this right? What if the DC doesn't work? The poor horse will have no anti-inflammatory medication on board and will be seriously hurting. I was thinking it might be best to start the DC ON TOP of the Previcox. Wait an appropriate amount of time for the DC to kick in (what is that amount of time please?) and if it does, then wean him off the Previcox. If it doesn't then go back to the Previcox 100% and try something else, possibly Mov-Ease? Thank you for your help! -- Sandy March 2017, Onalaska, WA, USA Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Sandy%20and%20Andy . |

Hi Sandy,
My understanding is that taking both can result in some serious side effects. The recommendation is, as you related, to make a direct switch. But, if you give DC for awhile and feel he’s not getting adequate relief, you can switch back to Previcox. He shouldn’t be on both simultaneously. I went through this with a pony a year ago and it was a smooth transition. It’s hard to imagine that a dose of Previcox could be so effective as to obliterate the intolerable pain you expect him to experience if the DC doesn’t do the job. If you can provide a comfortable place for him to lie down where he won’t be hassled by the other horses, he can spend time off his feet if he’d rather and you won’t need to be worried about him. It would be good for him to have a break from the NSAIDs even if you decide to return to their use. -- Martha in Vermont

There is actually no documented herb-drug interaction between Devil's Claw and NSAIDs but it's pointless to give them together. Firocoxib is meant to be used for up to 2 weeks only; other NSAIDs 7 to 10 days because of the kidney and intestinal side effects.

Sandy,
I would suggest looking into more permanent solutions. If the ringbone is involving the pastern joint, ethanol injections provide immediate pain relief and enhance joint fusion. -- Eleanor in PA www.drkellon.com |

Thank you Martha. This was what I needed to read. Do NOT give together, check!
Since I have powder what is the preferred method of dosing? He gets his compounded pergolide and the ground up Previcox in a little applesauce loaded into a dose syringe. This is the way he's got all of his meds for 6 years now. Works great. BUT if I can put a pinch or so (and build up) on top of his Haystack approved pellets along with his salt, wet it down a bit and feed that way it would be terrific. Your recommendation? Thank you again. BTW what are the serious side effects of giving the DC and Previcox together, if you can recall? -- Sandy March 2017, Onalaska, WA, USA Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Sandy%20and%20Andy . |

I understand. I'm trying to be a better horse owner by doing this now.
Thank you for your continued help Dr. Kellon. -- Sandy March 2017, Onalaska, WA, USA Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Sandy%20and%20Andy . |

Thank you very much. My veterinarian mentioned it was high ringbone. I would like to find a more permanent solution so Andy can be comfortable the rest of his life. He is 31 years old, top of the pecking order in his little herd of 3 (2 being minis) and enjoys life, except for this constant discomfort.
Are you talking about "facilitated ankylosis"? If so, can you recommend any reading on the subject? Thank you again. No one has ever suggested this to me, I'm definitely curious! -- Sandy March 2017, Onalaska, WA, USA Case History: https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Sandy%20and%20Andy . |

Thank you for the clarification on the concurrent use of DC and NSAIDS, Dr. Kellon. Good to know!
