Superman's weight
I have uploaded a recent photo of Superman. According to the weigh tape he has gained about 20 lbs. He is for sure getting 19lbs of a hay a day plus what he eats when turned out. He's got a bit of a winter coat but I think he's looking better except for the hay belly he now sports :( or is it lack of back muscle? Or both?

Hi Annette,
I agree he looks better in his photos. Sometimes the coat hides important details which you can judge better with your hands. I’m not sure about his topline/hay belly. He looks a bit resistant in the photo, which might also cause his back to drop. Can you take a photo of him loose in his stall or paddock? With his ACTH levels and the very small amounts of pergolide he is getting, I’m not convinced it is doing much for him. I feel like I might be missing a much deeper discussion about his history but there was nothing described in his case history. If he were my horse, I would consider taking him off pergolide for three weeks in the spring and doing a TRH stim test. If you feel he is symptomatic for PPID, especially with the hay belly/lack of topline, he could be a horse whose ACTH levels do not reflect how much pergolide he really needs. -- Martha in Vermont

Thank you for your thoughts Martha. I will ask for another picture, unfortunately I am managing him long distance and have to depend on others to do such things. You are right, there is more to the story. There is suspicion that his weight loss was brought on by castration. Dr.Kellon has recommended J-herb and DEHA but I wanted to make sure that he was getting the correct amount of forage(hay) first, which he is now. It was also suggested that I do the TRH test after a three week break in the spring which I plan to do. I wanted to do the TRH test before but the vet said the hormone could only be gotten from a human hospital with no input on how to go about that. So I'm not sure I can have that test done but at the least his ACTH can be tested. My vet says he doesn't have cushings and to feed him Purina Senior feed. What month would you recommend to stop Pergolide?

Sherry Morse
Hi Annette, If you're going to stop Prascend and do an TRH Stim test you want to do that in the somewhere between January and April.
Thanks, Sherry and Scutch (and Scarlet over the bridge) EC Primary Response PA 2014 https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/files/Sherry%20and%20Scutch_Scarlet https://ecir.groups.io/g/CaseHistory/album?id=78891 |

Thank you Sherry for the time frame. I have added two new pictures in Superman's album. He isn't free standing but he looks a bit more relaxed than the other day.
