TC Nat Bal Cubes- Replace with?

Chris Pennbo

Ok, the Timothy Cube shortage has finally caught up to us. Monte eats this product soaked as the majority of his feed. I have connections on getting some but probably not for at least two weeks!  The local feed store recommended Mountain Sunrise Timothy Pellets in the meantime.  She said its a good product with nothing but timothy in them. Can someone more knowledgeable than me take a look at the analysis and see what you think? I would much appreciate it. I don't know what we will feed Monte otherwise.
Thanks!

Go to our files and under 9c - feed analysis - on page 2 you will find Mountain Sunrise products

Hi Chris,

While he Mountain Sunrise Timothy pellets are generally a decent product, they are always an unknown as they aren't tested for each batch, so you can't know what the actual s/s will be. They aren't mineral balanced either.

You could buy a pallet of them, look to see if the are all the same batch number and have them tested but that would likely take 2 weeks to get all the answers, so doesn't help in the short term.

Can you ration the cubes you now have and mix them with beet pulp and Stabul 1 to get you thru?

Hi Chris.  I'd add to Lavinia's suggestions that you drop Aurielo a note to see if things can be expedited. You may have done this already but wanted to suggest JIC.

We realize your horse has to eat. There is no replacement for Triple Crown Timothy Balance Cubes, so you need to gin up an interim solution as Lavinia and Nancy suggested.

In an emergency (like an evacuation), I would (and did) feed a quality hay pellet with California Trace Plus pellets, ground flax, Vitamin E  and Magnesium Oxide as suggested in the Emergency Diet. California Trace can deliver within 3 days or so. If the delay in sourcing TC Timothy Balance Cubes is more than a few weeks, I second Lavinia's advice to buy in quantity from the same mill run (generally in a pallet),  sample and get a 603 analysis so the pellets can be determined to be carb-safe and balanced.

Hi Chris, Aurelio is at Ontario Dehy, and is our go to guy for all questions about ODTBC, you can get his number on the Ontario Dehy website.
Is your horse able to eat r/s/r beet pulp? If so, you can mix that with the Sunrise hay pellets to bring down the overall percentage of starch and sugar in each meal.
Also, as Lavinia mentioned, you can add in Stabul 1 pellets.
Feed shortages are pretty scary with our IR horses. Hopefully things will improve soon. Laura K Chappie & Beau (over the bridge)

Thanks everyone.  I left a message for Aurelio at Ontario Dehy but haven't had a response yet. I have spoken with Triple Crown several times. Basically TC lost one of their main distributors for CA/NV/AZ and this created a supply chain issue.  They are scrambling to replace that distributor and get things running smoothly again. Meanwhile they helped me find a feed store within 100miles who is placing an order and added our order to theirs. It will not arrive until the end of next week so we are supplementing what cubes we have with extra beet pulp and are confident Monte won't notice the difference until we get the new order. In case it's delayed for some reason another ECIR member who is relatively close reached out and offered a bag or two from her stock to tide us over should it become necessary. So great!  I am hopeful that the supply will pick up again but meanwhile we are stocking 6 months supply and will continue to see if it might be reasonable to ship direct from OD.
I appreciate everyone's help. Such a helpless feeling when you have a senior dependent on you for their well-being and you can't meet their needs.
