Tic X

Sue Neidlinger

Is Tic X safe for IR horses? Spirit has been diagnosed with chronic Lyme Disease. We just finished the 30 days of doxycycline and are waiting for follow up blood work to come back. I am hoping her numbers have dropped and am just looking at what supportive care I should be doing to keep her going strong.
She is still on her well balanced vitamin mineral no sugar regime with lots of trail riding exercise and has done wonderfully for the past 9 years so I don’t want to goof up that!
Thank you in advance!

Hi Sue,

In my experience depending on the Lyme titer 30 days may not be enough for treatment. Do you know what her number was the last time she was tested?  Also, we usually wait 90 days post treatment to retest as the Doxy is still working even after you stop it so keep that in mind as well.

As far as the Tic-X - not sure there's anything in there that's going to help but depending on the amount of turmeric I might be leery of it.

I don't see any recent ACTH values in the history. Is she well controlled? That's a very important factor here. I would be more likely to use Tic X if she was symptomatic. Otherwise, make sure trace mineral intakes are adequate and balanced, vitamin E at least 2000 IU/day, consider a month of 30 g L-glutamine to build up glutathione stores.

Sherry,
Thank you for your response. My vet waited 14 days after the last dose of doxycycline to test her. Her original number was 10,500. My vet called Cornell and is working with them to decide course of action. We know numbers might not be accurate after the two week, but they wanted to at least see a decrease rather than increase. If there is a decrease we will again retest after another 4-6 weeks. If an increase we may put her back on doxy or try the other course of antibiotics. The only reason I thought to check about tic x is someone on a Lyme fb page recommended it. But I hesitate to change anything in her diet as she has done so well staying healthy on the regime I have had her on for the past 9 years from help I received here.
It’s all so confusing and I just want her to remain healthy.

HI Dr Kellon,
YES!!! She is very well controlled, thanks to this group and all your help. Her feet have been fabulous, (she wears removable boots on trail) her weight good. We have done endurance rides as well as the Shore to Shore trail ride across MI. We have averaged 700-1000 trail miles per year. All from following all your recommendations on feed, hay and supplements. BUT now I have Lyme to contend with. She is showing weakness in her rear end muscles, just very slight and I have a massage therapist (who is also my trainer) working on her. It was this slight weakness that first sounded the alarm to the fact something was not right so I had her tested for lyme and that is what it is.
I do not want to upset any mineral or vitamin balance in this pony but I also want to give her as much support as I can if there is more I can do than just the physical exercising of her rear end. That is why I asked about the tic x and maybe I am jumping the gun here and just need to be patient and allow her muscles to come back slowly with the massages and slow riding. She is going to 21 in April.
Thank you for all your help, always. Sue and Spirit

Hi Sue,

I totally understand.  I've done 3 rounds of treatment now and the last time we did Exceed shots instead of Doxy.  The first one was not as high as your girl and we did 60 days of Doxy to get his level down (also went by symptoms).  It's a balancing act for sure and IME the hardest thing is making sure they don't feel too crappy from the meds.  I've been on Doxy and it's pretty horrible starting about day 7.

I am sorry your horse had a difficult time with the doxy. Spirit breezed through the doxy just fine, all 72 pills per day for 30 days! I used Coco Soya and Timothy only cubes to get her to eat it, but she did without any stomach upset, girthiness, or other symptoms. Thank goodness. But she is a pony and maybe that helps!
TYou are right. It is a balancing act for sure.

Sue,

Another thing that might help her is acetyl-L-carnitine https://mybesthorse.com/buy-now.html , 1 g/100 lbs body weight. It assists in energy generation within the muscle, supporting mitochondrial numbers and is also important for the myelin sheaths on nerves which is attacked in Lyme infections. Has she lost muscle mass? If so, 1 g of L-leucine per 100 lbs of body weight (same link) immediately before work should help rebuild.

She has not lost muscle mass, yet. The soreness seems to be in an old injury (she had been flipped over before I bought her and there is scar tissue which tends to push on her sciatica, which is a spot I have to watch) My vet thinks the lyme parasite settled into her “Achilles heel” which is that back area. We have her on 1/2 tablet of equiiox to help inflammation and to allow her to get back under saddle. The acetyl-L-carnitine could very well help. I will look into this. Thank you!

Got it ordered, thank you!!! This might just help the sciatica also!
