Transitioning to new owner

Bonnie

Due to my age and physical limitations, I must pass my Beloved Lad on to a new owner. I am happy that he is going to be with a family whose riding program will benefit him, and he will have plenty of people to interact with. (He's "A People Horse".)
I am trying to fine-tune feeding, making the new people aware of his special needs. Today I am asking for help deciding whether Purina Superfibre Intregri-t would be a suitable supper feed to put his meds into. I can't interpret some of the analysis on file here. Would it be safe to feed 4 cups, soaked? What about in his slow-feeder ball?

My old brain responds to anxiety by dropping facts, numbers, names, and Very Important Things.  Need some oversight here by someone with wits intact! Yes, I will have more questions...
Thanks!

Hi Bonnie,

I know this must be a very tough time, but that feed is definitely NOT suitable for an IR horse.  You can read more about it here: main@ECIR.groups.io | Purina Integri-T analysis results are in, starch and sugar higher than posted on feed tag

And read the actual analysis here: 2021-08-08-Purina Integri-T Pellets.png (groups.io)

Is there a reason you wouldn't keep him on the Timoth Balance Cubes as a carrier?

Bonnie

I was pretty sure it was too high in sugar, starch and fat, The reason I ask is that the new home will be in New Brunswick, several provinces away. Have not found any information yet on whether the Timothy Balance cubes are available in the Maritimes. The future owner is using the Purina product for her other horses.

Hi Bonnie,

What a tough time this is for you. The two of you are like a fixture here.( :-) ) But it is wonderful that Lad does have a new home waiting for him.
Hopefully Aurelio will be reading and can answer the availability question wrt the Complete Cubes.( ODTBC)
But you could also contact him directly for an answer....which is hopefully affirmative.

There is a Purina product that might be a possibility(I can't believe I am saying that)if she can't see her way clear to using other products, which is https://www.sharpefarmsupplies.com/purina-equilibrium-optimal?gclid=Cj0KCQjw4omaBhDqARIsADXULuV9hWvi2dvKlDl_VyIbnZwbrmTIRrLkrhGrO65IXIWlL7-1BkrFlk8aAhxEEALw_wcB

I know of a PPID/IR horse here who has done  well on it for a number of years , at 1kg a day. It is part of his mineral balanced diet ( balanced by one of our long-time members),adding in his hay ration. Just a thought.

P.S. Just to say that the horse in question is an IR poster child breed, and on 4mg of pergolide to boot.So he is someone who needs to be watched.
His owner is a member here and may join the conversation if more details would be helpful.( and if the Complete Cubes are not a possibility)

Bonnie, that is a tough time for you but I’m so glad you have found a suitable place for Lad where he can thrive. When I first joined the group and was struggling with my pony, I remember reading some of your messages and feeling inspired. Hopefully we can sort out the feed issue to keep Lad in the healthy state you have maintained over many years.

Thank you, Lorna. I will pass on the recommendation to the interim caregiver as well as the permanent owner. Lad must be trailered to the first placement to await the arrival of a cross-Canada horse transport, so must go through more changes than ideal. Bonus, he will meet Charlotte, a mare headed to the same home. He is still a stallion in his heart, and will have bonding time with her in transit.
