Vitamin E and glycerin

Alice

I have looked through all the files and I can't find the reason that vitamin E capsules compounded with glycerin are not as good as those formulated with oil. Can someone please explain??
Thanks!

Hi Alice,

Oil enhances the absorption of the vitamin E, so it's more effective.

Thank you...I do understand that. I am looking for a bit more in-depth info. Is the glycerin form totally ineffective?? or substantially so? By what percent??
if so, why is it produced that way??
Just curious.....

Hi Alice. here is an article from Dr. K about Vitamin E. https://drkhorsesense.wordpress.com/2018/07/01/vitamin-e-and-selenium-are-powerful-protectors/ ...this is just one of the articles she has on this website about Vit E...so further reading on your part may get your questions answered from that direction.

If you google Glycerin you will find lots of information about it. Its actually used in lots of foods, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. Its mechanism of action appears to be different as compared to the reaction between vit E and oil.  Also, google "saponification"... it will give you more information too.

In order to get to percentages of effectiveness, etc you would need to go to PubMed.gov and go to their nutrition section and key in Vit E, absorption etc. And then start reading the abstracts to see if that particular research study holds the answers or keys to what you are looking for.  I hope this helps...I too want the more  indepth explainations and I use Pubmed frequently and look at the research...sometimes it takes some practice to dig through, but you will learn alot in the process :) Hope this is helpful.

Glycerin is what is IN the capsules, in place of the oil we'd like to have

It’s frustrating that so many Vit E sources have switched to glycerin and removed the oil. The only local (among 3 towns) place to buy Vit E that includes oil is CVS. I know it’s available to order, but it’s nice to be able to pick it up locally. A lot of people aren’t getting what they think they’re paying for. I guess that’s nothing new. 🙁

In searching through PubMed as Trisha suggested...I have indeed learned a lot!  I learned that there is s HUGE difference in bioavilability of actual Vitamin E depending on the source of the vitamiin ( natural vs. sythetic) due to the various isomers in each source. Some isomers are biologically active while others are not. Synthetic vitamin E ( dl alpha tocoperyl acetate) manufactured from petrochemicals is only about 50% as effective as Vitamin E from natural sources (such as soybean oil). I found this infomation on the National Institue of Health (NIH) Fact Sheet on Vitamin E.
https://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/VitaminE-HealthProfessional/#:~:text=Alpha%2D%20(or%20%CE%B1%2D),absorbed%20from%20the%20small%20intestine.
I found the same information in a couple other sources: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17628178/
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3997530/

But I didn't find anything about using glycerin vs oil in the preparation of the capsules. My guess is that the glycerin has a longer shelf life. But as far as efficacy...I can't find the science yet.

Hi Alice,

The studies done on vitamin E in horses used the synthetic form, so when we talk about doses in horses, we are talking about synthetic vitamin E.  I mention that just in case you were thinking you need to switch to the natural form.

Vitamin E, like D and A, is a fat soluble vitamin.  I don't know the research on it personally but recommendations for humans are to take these vitamins with the largest meal of the day (presumably with the most fat) to enhance absorption.
