Wheat bran ok?
Yoyo had another impaction colic. We're not sure if it's a "new" cause or if not all of the stuff was passed through. It has been suggested to me (not by a vet) that wheat bran can cause diarrhea and thus push thru what is there. The amount suggested was 2-4 cups a twice a day until "it seems to have passed". Then reduce the amount from then on. I've seen posts here that seemed to say it's ok, apparently in limited amounts, to flat out it's not suitable. I've sent an email to my vet, but it won't be seen until Monday. I'm confused.

There is too much starch to feed plain wheat bran mashes. Make a mash of 2 part beet pulp, 1 part wheat bran, 1 cup psyllium husk fiber, 1 tablespoon of salt. Weigh the beet pulp and wheat bran dry. Make it as watery as Yoyo will eat.

Thank you! Is it ok to use Haystack Low/low instead of beet pulp? That's what I've been using to make his mash. (I will change to beet pulp if it's a better choice). And should I feed this once a day or can I split it between three feeding? Normally he gets only enough Low/Low to mix his minerals (4 oz three times a day), so should I increase the mash amount by quite a lot and reduce the hay amount accordingly? (To stay within the 19 Lbs he gets fed daily)? Luckily, Yoyo loves his mash to be quite wet.

No, that is considerably higher than well rinsed/soaked/rinsed beet pulp. Why do you want to feed wheat bran?

Lorna- I don't understand your reply. I have been feeding Low/Low for years. I buy it directly from the company as they are based in the Bend area.

Yoyo has had two impaction colic episodes almost exactly one month apart. I want to avoid another one. I've gotten rid of the very dry and stemy and now am feeding tested Orchard Grass. I've been rinsing/soaking the hay -(15 min-1/2 hr) and feeding watery Low/low mash with his minerals. It was suggested that wheat bran in a really wet mash would help get both water and fiber into Yoyo to hopefully keep his gut in motion and avoid a third colic. I'm also looking at a way to not have the hay rinsed/soaked for a week but still get water/fiber in him. I need to have neighbors take over the feeding as I'm having heart surgery and while I can deal with the rather intensive and time consuming rinse/soak process, that is too much to expect from my neighbors.

Dr Kellon- I forgot to ask what do you mean by "that(low/low?) is considerably higher than well r/s/r BP? What is it higher in?

Hi Ronelle,
I can't check Yoyo's CH(is there a link?),but was concerned about ingredients and ESC +Starch ,in case they would make a difference for him. Ingredients are timothy, alfalfa, rice bran, beet pulp, and flax meal. Although ESC + Starch falls just under the 10% recommended as a cut off here (9.8%),there are 2 numbers for ESC (6.05% and 5.5% ),which is interesting . Maybe I am over reacting .But we know that some horses react more than others to seemingly small variations. You have a lot on your plate. Thinking of you. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario 2002 |

It's higher in starch and sugar.
