Why would a vet be opposed to doing TRH Stim test?
hannahmccargar@...
Hi All!
I've searched in messages and files but haven't been able to find an answer to this: I recommended that a client ask their vet for a TRH Stim test on her chronically laminitic Paso mare. She did ask, and apparently the vet was appalled at the suggestion and said she'd never do that test because it could be harmful to the horse and she could "tell just by looking at her what's wrong with her." Are there safety concerns with the TRH Stim test? Or are you aware of why a vet would respond this way? Any way I can help assuage fears? Thanks for any thoughts you have! -- - Hannah November 2017, Northeast Iowa No case histories yet |

Sorry, I can't answer your question. Just had to say..... P.S. It would be great if your client could join us here. -- Lorna in Eastern Ontario 2002 |

No risks that I know of.

Hi Hannah, I wonder if your client's vet is confused by the testing and is thinking of the oral sugar test for IR? For a horse that's 'chronically laminitic' we would recommend baseline ACTH or the TRH Stim test as well as insulin and glucose. No need to do a challenge test.

Thanks Sherry!
That was my first thought too. And thanks Dr. Kellon - glad to confirm that there aren't known risks with the TRH Stim test. Onward! :) -- - Hannah November 2017, Northeast Iowa No case histories yet |
