Yet Another flax question!

Silvia

Hi!

I have been reading the ECIR archives concerning flax and have some questions on this subject that I haven”t found treated. I hope I can get some help !

i know the recommendation here is to  ground flax and give it immediately. But it takes me 1.5-2 hrs to go from my home to the pasture where Arya is kept.  Would that time frame be ok or by then the cyanide in the flax grounded seed exposed to air would be a concern?

Traditionally flax was given cooked. I have read that cooking destroy in the seeds the very omega 3 that we want to give. Would the omega 3 remain in the boiling water or do they evaporate and get lost? If in the water, I could give it after it has cooled…

if the seed is soaked overnight in water, instead of grounded, would it be safe to give in the morning? I guess not, but thought I would ask here to be sure.

Thank you in advance  !

That 1.5 to 2 hour time frame is fine. Boiling likely destroys the fragile omeg-3s. Soaking is dangerous because it allows contact between the enzymes and the glycosides.

I am a bit concerned about my practise, Dr. Kellon, after reading your line about soaking.  My horse is also a long drive away and I prep bucket feeds for about four days at a time and keep cool to frozen for boarding people to feed.  Would that be considered soaking, or okay.  Note that BP is usually allowed to drain for 6 - 12 hours before I mix it in with meneral blends, flax etc...  I allow the drain time so that it doesn't freeze into a solid lump when fed during winter.  Horse tends to pick at it for hours.

Triple Crown makes stabilized ground flax that can be fed straight from the bag as does Turtle Mountain Flax

Kandace, maybe you could put the flax in a separate baggie and the barn can mix it in to the rest of the feed at feeding time??

Thanks Kirsten,
Unfortunately they will only put food in front of horse.,  But my time here is down to one month now, K will be coming home for summer by the end of April and I can start the search for a winter barn all over again.  There is another message with a similar question

I too have been mixing the TC stableized Flax (1/2lb per feeding) in my beet pulp what bran mix that contain all the powdery supplements.  I keep the dry ingredients in a bucket but once I add the rsr beetpulp I mix with quite a bit of hot water at home and then take to the barn to feed.  Sometimes I feed it right away sometimes it can be up to 2 hours later.  And Vinnie doesn't always consume the entire tub right away.

I am wondering now if I need to change this routine?

Thx Nan

Maybe someone can verify what I think I’m remembering. Years ago flax seed was discussed in the old Michael Plumb’s Horse Journal. I “think” I remember reading that stabilized ground flax seed was safe from the cyanide thing. Back then there were 2 recommended stabilized flax sources, HorseTech and Omega Fields Horseshine. I remember ordering HorseTech Glanzen 3 for the flax and the biotin. Hopefully someone can answer the cyanide question.

Hi Laura,

Dr. K said this, back on Jan 24/22. Does it help?

https://ecir.groups.io/g/main/message/273035

There has never been a case of cyanide poisoning caused by flax in any species. Cyanide does not accumulate. Temperatures as low as 50 C can damage omega-3 fatty acids. Minerals are not affected. Vitamins depend on the form.

Odds are excellent I wrote whatever you are remembering. I was contributing veterinary editor and wrote all the nutritional articles.

There has never been a reported case of cyanide poisoning from flax in any species. Never. The greatest risk is from green seeds.  There is actually no "stabilizing" procedure except for the type of slicing.
