Yucca
Is DAC yucca 5 way safe to give my gelding with cushings? If not what are some other recommendations for arthritis pain?

Yucca is not recommended here. We do recommend Mov-Ease by My Best Horse, Devil's Claw, and Phytoquench with Devil's Claw.

Yucca can have an insulin resistance effect. In addition to what Sherry mentioned, Hemp Joint is a good combination https://uckele.com/hemp-joint-support-2lb-bag.html . Recent research has shown that Devil's Claw works on cannabinoid receptors. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32842461/ .

Dr. Kellon, I am confused at the recommendation in this thread of Hemp Joint to a horse with Cushings. I had considered trying it for Tipperary last year, but then read your response to a member asking about the actual mechanism by which CBD works last year and avoided using it. As part of that thread , this was your response.

In ADHD, PTSD, seizures, etc. it's not a matter of flow being blocked per se but rather an imbalance in the production of neurotransmitters.
CBD actually reduces dopamine effects. PPID isn't a problem with too much dopamine. It's too little. There's no evidence that CBD could actually cause this in a normal individual but it might have a significant effect in one that is already abnormal. CBD does bind to dopamine receptors, just like pergolide, but it blocks the effects of dopamine. I wouldn't give it to a PPID horse. You are correct, Dawn. I was thinking in terms of insulin effects, not dopamine.

So if I'm understanding correctly,
No yucca for IR, but CBD/Hemp ok if not on Pergolide? But CBD/Hemp should NOT be used with Pergolide? -- Amy Diehl CA/NV 2017 PHCP Holistic Hoof Care No horse CH |

That's right, Amy.
